GSB-88 was recently submitted to a rigorous and complete Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) guidelines and qualifications
which examines products to determine if they are truly green. With high scores in every
category, GSB-88 received the ultimate reward, an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). No other asphalt product or seal coat of any kind has ever been subjected to this intense and comprehensive process!
Instead of casually calling a product "Green", this academically rigorous, internationally accepted evaluation process includes all three phases of a product life cycle.
The three phases include the environmental impact measured by eight evaluation criteria being applied to: 1) each component of the product, 2) the actual use of the product, and 3) the eventual recycling of the product. We believe
that means if GSB-88 was utilized on a global scale it could save 1.2 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year and billions of
dollars in savings.
Has anybody noticed our pavements aging and deteriorating faster than ever before?
Lets go back to school for a moment, Econ 101. Asphalt is the heaviest residue left in the cracking/refining process of crude oil. Demand for new sophisticated chemicals like powerful epoxy's, anti-oxidants, ultraviolet inhibitors and polymers to name a few, fractioned from crude during the refining process has skyrocketed. We learned that an increased demand coupled with a static supply also raises costs. When increasing demand of our growing infrastructure is applied to a static supply, cost increases. Pavements must now be replaced at shorter intervals because of lesser performing binders (the result from removal of vital components in the refining process) and that applies further demand on a lesser supply, while costs increase.
We know that a rapidly rising demand for specialty chemicals that sell for much more money than asphalt binders drive profit oriented producers towards profit centers and away from producing asphalt cement. High tech refining processes today allow some refineries to crack petroleum all the way down. Some refineries no longer produce asphalt cement because it does not command enough margin of profit. This reduction in supply applies further market pressure driving costs upward.
In summary, we know the quality of binder materials has declined evidenced by FHWA research, we know the supply of materials has been reduced from many producers, to fewer, and we know increased demands to build new, and rehabilitate, and reconstruct our roads, highways and runways has compounded as our infrastructure has begun to age and buckle under growing use! We seem to be caught between a rock and a hard place.
Why not by-pass the refinery? Un-Refined Binder?
What if you could turn back the clock a million years? Gilsonite, made by Mother Nature, is petrified asphalt cement. Unlike asphalt binders derived from crude oil, Gilsonite does not need to be refined nor has it had "the goodies" removed for other uses. Unlike common highly refined asphalt binders used for hot mix, asphalt emulsions, slurry, fog, chip seals and driveway coatings, Gilsonite does not go through crude-oil cracking process. Nothing is taken out, everything is left intact! Gilsonite is fully compatible with all bitumen, and retains all vital components for long-term performance. The Million-year-old Gilsonite resin is first mined, then transformed into GSB-88 Sealer Binder liquid preservation treatment. When applied to asphalt surfaces as a Preservation Treatment, GSB-88 penetrates into the matrix and fills micro-voids while it toughens all asphalt surfaces. The high molecular density of Gilsonite Resin creates an impervious shell and becomes integral within the surface of the pavement, allowing all types of pavement to better withstand heavy traffic, plows, while greatly reducing the effects of the aging process.
